Vera stops Pullman, adds three-run homer in 21-5 win

Pitcher Jared Vera tossed five strong innings and helped his own cause with a three-run homer late in the game as Sehome pounded Pullman 21-5 in the Class 2A state semifinals Friday night.

The Mariners' victory sends them into Saturday's 7 p.m. state championship game against East Valley of Yakima.

Sehome broke open a 2-1 game with six runs in the fifth inning, then put it out of reach with 11 runs in the sixth. Vera's three-run blast to left was the big blow in the sixth, and Conor Long had a pair of RBI singles in that inning.

In the fifth, Wes Drilias and Anthony Pitsch both singled home runs, two more runs scored on errors, and Vera and Drilias closed the scoring with RBI bases-loaded walks.

Vera was 2-for-2, also knocking a double, and had three walks. Pitsch, Ryan Williams and Tenny Pitsch also had two hits each.

Sehome managed nine of its 16 hits in the sixth inning. Ten of the 11 runs in that frame were earned.
