Rangers in semis

Naches Valley wins twice, earns 3rd straight final four trip

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

MOSES LAKE, Wash. — At Naches, they have a name for it. They call it Ranger baseball.

Its tradition continued in impressive fashion Saturday, with Naches Valley qualifying for its third consecutive state final four with a 6-3 defeat of Omak followed by an 8-3 win over River View at Larson Field.

The Rangers (22-2-1) will next meet Chimacum in a Class 1A semifinal at 1 p.m. Friday in Yakima County Stadium. The game will provide a rematch of the programs that opposed each other for the 2007 state championship in Wenatchee, with the Cowboys prevailing in that one 4-2.

Under coach Bill Walker, Naches Valley has made the final four five times since 1999 — twice at the Class 2A level and the last three at 1A.

Joe Mills was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in NV’s state quarterfinal victory and Ethan Flory was 2-for-2.

Thomas Wilcox, who singled and tripled, threw a complete-game six-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Against Omak, the Rangers came back from a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Wilcox had a two-run double in the fifth and Mills and Adam Ranger each had an RBI in the sixth.
