Tarver's game-winning single gives Bulldogs 5-4 victory

For Luke Dilly, it hurt so good.
The Cashmere senior had no sooner crossed home plate
with the winning run Saturday when he was buried beneath jubilant teammates
and coaches in celebration of the Bulldogs' 5-4 win over Chimacum for the
Class 1A state championship at Yakima County Stadium.
"I was at the very bottom of the pile and it hurt --
it hurt bad," Dilly said, smiling. "But I wouldn't trade the feeling for
anything."
Dilly had homered in the fourth inning before
leading off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left. After an
intentional walk to Cooper Elliott, Nick Tarver singled to left-center to
score Dilly.
After starting the game at shortstop, Dilly came on
to pitch the final three innings to win the first state baseball title for
Cashmere (21-3), a Class 1A basketball power in the 1970s.
"Scoring the winning run was the most exciting
thing," Dilly said, "even if it did hurt afterward."
Dylan Brown had a two-run double in the fourth and
Landon Cray and Devin Manix drove in runs in the top of the seventh to tie
it for Chimacum (18-4), which won the championship in 2007.
