White River had the Lions on their heels early on, building up a six-points behind the frenetic defensive energy of point guard Alex Sayler.

“White River’s pretty quick,” said Lynden coach Brian Roper, whose team finished with a 24-4 record. “Their quickness really gave us trouble. They came out guns a-blazin’, and their point guard (Sayler) was pretty disruptive. We were on our heels a little bit offensively because he was pressuring the ball so well.”

But the Lions quickly took control behind their own balanced scoring, much of it coming off the bench. Jacob and John Shine came off the bench to shoot a combined 11-for-13 for the game, and those two and Jaremy Martin together scored 13 first-half points as Lynden took a 29-18 lead into the intermission. The Lions led the rest of the way.

“It’s humbling for me as a coach because we have such stud athletes,” Roper said. “With Johnny (Shine) and Lucas coming in, they don’t just give us minutes, they make us better. That’s our biggest strength, our depth.”

Billy Kiel paced White River (25-6) with 14 points, and Jason Tyler added 12.
