  Here's How It Could Happen

One of the points of top-10 lists is to create friendly who-would-win-if arguments, and certainly the panelists in the Herald-Republic's voting did plenty of that among themselves in making their selections.

Jim Carberry, who covered Lynden Christian's 1996 champs and Foster's 1986 squad for the Bellingham Herald, contributed a just-for-the-fun-of-it scenario for what might happen if the two teams could somehow cross time and face off.

Here's Carberry's vision:

* * *

The Bulldogs' game plan to use their devastating press to slow down the Lyncs leads to trouble right away as Shannon Dykstra's dribbling and Lynden Christian's strong passing game leads to some easy baskets and an early eight-point LC lead.

The Bulldogs also find the going tough inside, as Lisa Berendsen and Carla Geleynse shoe Foster's Renae Duffie and Sherri Johnson the toughest defense they've faced all year.

But Foster fights back as the "twin towers" pound inside and get Berendsen into foul trouble, Tracy Sanderson's quick hands disrupt the Lyncs' halfcourt offense and the Bulldogs chip away and finally take the lead on Kelly Williams' jumper at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

Lynden Christian, however, takes a chance and stays with its man-to-man defense as 6-2 sophomore Julie Wynstra comes in for some valuable minutes, and the defense of Kari Hamstra and Dykstra never lets Foster's shooters, Williams and Diana Reiners, get an open shot.

Back and forth the two giants battle, contesting every shot, and with 30 seconds left the game is tied. With time running out, Foster tries to hold for a last shot, but Dykstra gets a steal and, with the Bulldogs all over Berendsen, the pass goes out to senior point guard Erin Hof at the 3-point line.

Her shot goes up at the buzzer sounds ... swish!

The dream game is over: Lynden Christian 61, Foster 58.
