  Brewster Rolls Past Zillah, 53-26

By SCOTT SPRUILL

Tim Taylor expected it a lot sooner than this. So good is his Brewster boys basketball team that somebody was bound to try it.

So Zillah gave it a shot.

And ended up like all the others.

Trying to stall unbeaten Brewster into frustration and mistakes, Zillah spread the floor and brought the first half of Thursday’s state quarterfinal to a near halt. But Taylor’s Bears didn’t blink, didn’t flinch and didn’t lose.

Relinquishing only five turnovers and exerting a dominating presence in offensive rebounding, Brewster marched forward with a 53-26 victory for its 26th victory of the season.

“We had a hunch Zillah would try that, and it’s the first time we’ve seen it. I’ve been waiting all season for it,” said Taylor, whose team led 17-6 at halftime and 27-12 after three quarters. “We stressed being patient and not rushing the offense and the kids did that very well.”

In order for a slow-down strategy to work, you need a lead and you can’t turn the ball over. The Leopards never did get the lead and had turnovers on seven of their 12 first-half possessions. But coach Doug Burge didn’t second-guess himself.

“That’s a talented, great team,” he said. “We felt if we slowed it down that was our best chance. We tried to get them to gamble and make some mistakes so they’d get themselves into trouble. But they never did.”

Zillah possessed the ball for over 13 minutes in the first half but had only two field goals to show for it. Still, the Leopards trailed only 14-6 late in the first half.

That’s when Brewster turned the tables and held the ball for the final minute and freshman Michael Taylor stuck a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“I thought we did OK in the first half until Taylor hit that three,” said Zillah’s junior point guard, Kelly Anderson. “Before that we’re only down eight. But it was so tough trying to play keep-away against their (man-to-man) defense. They never got frustrated like we’d hoped.”

David Pendergraft, Brewster’s 6-foot-6 junior who’s already committed to Gonzaga University, scored a game-high 12 points with six rebounds. Four of those boards were offensive and the taller Brewster team was brutal in that regard with a 16-4 advantage.

Andy Hill, a 6-4 senior, led the second-chance charge with six of his nine rebounds on offense.

“Andy’s very strong and has a real quick jump,” Taylor said. “We were patient with our shots and if we missed the guys really attacked the boards.”

Sophomore Duran Torrez led the young Leopards with 10 points. It was Torrez’s 3-pointer with 1:52 left in the game that kept Zillah from the record book for fewest points scored. The record is 22.

Zillah (16-10) will face King’s (15-11) Friday in a loser-out game at 12:30 p.m. The winner will play for fourth and seventh place on Saturday.
