Warriors Take Semi Spot
By
MICHAEL ANDERSON
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Seattle Christian’s Warriors set a simple goal going into Thursday’s state
1A quarterfinal with Freeman.
They wanted to hold the Scotties to eight or less offensive rebounds.
The Warriors (24-1) cut that in half, holding Freeman to four, and rang up a
38-22 margin overall en route to their fourth straight semifinal appearance,
beating the Scotties 56-41 at the SunDome.
Seattle Christian will face Goldendale, the Cinderella of the tournament, in
the late semifinal, scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday. The Timberwolves, the
fourth seed from the SCAC, vanquished Winlock, 58-48, earlier in the day.
Freeman drops into the consolation bracket and will face Winlock at 2 p.m.
One possession in the middle of the third period typified the SC effort on
the glass.
The Warriors snared three straight offensive rebounds and then stole the
ball after Freeman had finally grabbed a rebound. Senior guard Nick Lindseth
capped it of fwith a floating jumper along the left baseline at 4:12. That
made 31-23 Warriors and after a Sam Brube lay-in for Freeman, SC closed the
period with a 10-2 run.
“We always talk about how the little things make a difference,” SC coach
Roger DeBoer said. “To make plays like that shows the kind of heart these
kids have.”
Freeman (24-5) was hurt by the loss of second-leading scorer Pat Love who
went down with a knee in jury of unknown severity midway thru the third
period.
Jordan Collier led Seattle Christian with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also
finished with 10 turnovers, thanks in large part, De Boer noted, to the
defensive pressure the Scotties applied to him.
Nick Lindseth and Rob Peterson had seven rebounds each for Seattle
Christian.
Trailing 18-16 after one period, SC turned up the defensive intensity and
held the Scotties to 10 points over a stretch that spanned more than nine
minutes. By the time the siege was over, the Warriors led 41-27 and were one
step closer to becoming the first Class 1A team to play in four straight
state championship games. It also keeps Seattle Christian on track for a
return date with top-ranked and unbeaten Brewster, the only team to have
beaten the Warriors this season. That highly-anticipated game, if it takes
place, would be in the championship game.
