Season
of Firsts Ends for CWA
By
MICHAEL ANDERSON
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
A season of firsts came to a sudden, emotional end Friday for the Charles
Wright Tarriers in a 47-36 consolation loss to Bellevue Christian in the
Class 1A boys state basketball tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome.
After a season in which the team recorded its initial league title, district
tournament appearance, state tournament appearance and state tournament win,
CWA was looking to cap the year with a first-ever state tournament trophy.
Bellevue Christian brought that talk to a halt, forcing 23 turnovers, six
more than CWA’s average for the tournament.
Despite outrebounded the Vikings 23-15, the Tarriers ran out of gas in the
second half and faded.
“I thought our kids played their guts out,” CWA coach Bob Beeman said
outside an emotional Tarrier locker room. “We missed Greg today (son Greg
Beeman, who missed the game after suffering a hip pointer in Thursday’s win
over River View) and that last stretch hurt us.”
Beeman was talking about a two-minute stretch in the middle of the fourth
period where the Vikings took control.
Leading 31-30, Bryan Egly hit a free throw, a 3-pointer and a lay-in. Those
points, coupled with four Tarriers’ turnovers and a lay-in by Bryan Dean
gave Bellevue Christian a 39-30 lead with 4:20 left.
Charles Wright stayed close early thanks to a heroic effort from Jonathan
Medley -- doing things that show up in the scorebook -- and Casey Patnode
and Sam Bathurst, doing things that don’t.
Medley was 5-for-7 from the floor in the first half and had four rebounds
and finished with 24 points -- on 9 of 11 shooting from the floor -- and
nine rebounds.
Patnode had seven rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes of work and
Bathurst had four rebounds and three assists. Between them, they kept
finding ways to get the ball to Medley in position for easy shots.
“They didn’t score a ton of points, but they both do the things that no one
notices,” Beeman said. “They ran things for us all day.”
