A day after succumbing to a top-ranked and unbeaten team, things got a lot
easier for Zillah's boys on Friday.
All the Leopards had to do was face the two-time defending champions of the
Class 1A state tournament in a loser-out game.
"How about that for a draw?" said a worn out but relatively satisfied Doug
Burge, Zillah's coach. "We played three veteran teams in three days.
Bellevue Christian, Brewster and King's -- that would be tough for any
team."
Especially a young one.
After socking King's with its best quarter of play at state in the second
period, Zillah wilted in the second half and fell 69-50 to end its season
with a 16-11 record.
"The kids played hard and won a game here, and those are three pretty good
programs we played," Burge said. "It would've been nice to get a trophy but
we'll have most of these kids back next year. We've got that to look forward
to."
King's (16-11) will play Freeman (25-5) for fourth and seventh place
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. It will be the Knights' fifth straight state trophy.
For a time in the second quarter, it appeared that streak for the Seattle
school might come to an end.
Down 20-11 after one quarter, the Leopards put King's directly on its heels
by scoring 19 of the first 23 points in the second quarter. Juniors Kelly
Anderson and Drew Affholter and sophomore Duran Torrez fueled the surge with
five points apiece, and Zillah pried open a six-point lead with 1:43 left in
the half.
But in the final 87 seconds before the break King's erupted back to life
with a 10-0 run, including a layup at the buzzer, that put the Knights up
34-30.
"From six up to four down in a couple minutes, that was a real big swing,"
Burge said. "The kids did a great job getting that lead but we just made
some young mistakes."
"We always stress to the kids about not letting a team get a big run, and if
they do get something going to answer back quick," noted King's Marv Morris.
"We tried to change the pace of the game and we did that. We picked up the
pace and the pressure, got some turnovers and turned it around."
King's carried that momentum into the second half, and Zillah's offense wore
down scoring only two field goals in the third quarter.
"We had some trouble with turnovers and it seemed like every time it
happened they'd get a layup out of it," Burge said.
Torrez, a 6-foot guard and fullback on the football team, was Zillah's only
scorer in double figures for the second straight game. He had 17 points and
six rebounds, giving him 31 and 13, respectively, for the tournament.
Chris Faidley, the MVP of last year's state tournament, collected 22 points,
eight rebounds and four assists for King's. Kyle Doherty added 20 points,
and 6-foot-5 John Zevenbergen -- who's three inches taller than any of
Zillah's starters -- grabbed 13 rebounds.
