Napavine Pulls Out Win for Third

Despite loss, Timberwolves pleased with season, state appearance

Perspective can be elusive.

Especially for high-schoolers. Especially when they’ve just lost.

But Keegan Cook seemed to have a grip on matters Saturday, even though he’d have much rather been on the other end of Goldendale’s 59-54 Class 1A state tournament loss to Napavine.

“I’m not disappointed at all,” he said after hoisting the Timberwolves’ sixth-place trophy before a sizable throng of Goldendale fans in the Yakima Valley SunDome. “My goal all along, once we got here, was to be playing on Saturday. And that’s what we did.”

Despite losing its last two games, there was many more positives than negatives about this team in this tournament.

First, even though it was the Yakima Valley district’s fourth and final seed, it was the only one to win a trophy.

And the Timberwolves for the most part combined effort with efficiency, wowing fans with two superlative winning performances before running into once-beaten Seattle Christian in Friday night’s semifinals. The extreme amount of energy spent in that battle no doubt took its toll against Napavine.

“I think we played our best basketball here,” Cook said, “but we were definitely tired today. We had a tough game last night, and it took a lot out of us.”

Enough so that coach Mike Carlquist kidded afterward that perhaps his team would have been better served by taking a different tact.

“Maybe we should have taken last night off and gone to a movie,” he said.

Nonetheless, it was a banner Goldendale season.

The Timberwolves finished 16-12 and won the 11th trophy in their 14 Class 1A state appearances. And Cook put on a performance that his community members will fondly recall for years.

The 6-foot-3 senior totaled 21 points, four rebounds and five assists, capping what clearly was one of the top individual efforts of the tournament.

“Keegan Cook,” Carlquist said, shaking his head in wonder. “He’s like family. His dad called me when Keegan was in third grade and asked if he could get into basketball camp a year early. And he’s, like, the perfect example for all the little kids in Goldendale to look up to.”

Sophomore Callan Wilkins, who also had a stellar tournament, added 13 points and Cody Latimer had 11 points and six rebounds.

But Napavine, coached by ex-Central Washington University assistant Rex Stanley, outshot (50 percent to 41) and outrebounded (32-23) the Timberwolves en route to running its record to 23-4.

Tyson Sturza was the Tigers’ hottest shooter with 18 points, making 4 of 5 3-pointers. Loren Bluhm added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Goldendale, which trailed most of the first half, staged a Cook-led 15-4 run for a 41-35 lead with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.

But Napavine, spurred by successive 3-balls from Sturza, scored 16 of the next 22 points for a 51-45 cushion with 3:51 left in the game. And by that time Cook, Wilkins and company were out of gas.

“We’re not very big, so we have to be very active in order to rebound,” Carlquist said. “Then again, we didn’t even include state in our first meeting of the year. We didn’t even talk about it. It was just a great season with a great group of kids.

“I should have payed the school district to let me coach.”
