YAKIMA, Wash. -- Two-time defending state champion King’s rode strong opening and final quarters Wednesday en route to an opening-round 51-35 victory over River View in the Class 1A boys state tournament.

Chris Faidley led the Knights with 24 points, including 7-of-14 shooting from the field and a 9-of-9 effort at the free-throw line. Faidley had nine points in the first quarter, when eighth-ranked King’s (15-10) pulled out to an 18-5 advantage.

Faidley, Sam Hartman and John Zevenbergen each had six rebounds for the Knights.

Don Sonderland scored 12 points and Stevie Rivas had 10 for the Panthers (17-7), who outshot King’s but couldn’t overcome the sluggish first quarter. River View made 41 percent of its shots (14 of 34) to 39 percent (16 of 41) for King’s.
