  T-Wolves Bring Their 1A Game

By ROGER UNDERWOOD
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

Mike Carlquist insisted his sweater had nothing to do with it.

Wearing one to Goldendale’s basketball games has become something of a trademark for Carlquist, though he typically removes it during the first quarter. On Wednesday, he doffed it before tipoff of the Timberwolves' Class 1A state tournament opener with Orcas Island.

“I’m not superstitious,” Carlquist shrugged afterward in the Yakima Valley SunDome. “It was warm in here. That’s why I did it.”

Carlquist wasn’t the only T-Wolf who was hot.

With Keegan Cook missing only one of 11 field goal attempts and his team shooting 52 percent, Goldendale blew away Orcas 62-31 in one of the tournament’s more impressive Day One performances.

By doing so, the Timberwolves (15-10) advanced to a quarterfinal matchup at 7:30 Thursday against Winlock. The Cardinals (17-6) earned their spot in the final eight by beating a White Swan team Goldendale had lost three times to.

A Class 1A power for years, the Timberwolves had played at the Class 2A level the past five seasons. They returned to Class 1A this school year for their 14th state tournament appearance.

Playing like Goldendale teams of old, the Timberwolves’ efficiency in burying a team with many of its key players back from a fourth-place state finish a year ago was startling. Even to Carlquist.

“I really can’t explain it,” he said, “other than we shot the ball really well.”

Especially Cook.

The 6-foot-3 senior led a first-half assault in which his team shot 63 percent en route to a 36-17 lead. He was 7-for-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and made the only free throw he took for a 17-point total.

By the time Cook missed, with 6:43 left in the game, Goldendale led 47-24. His totals were 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Vikings were clearly aware of Cook, assigning one defender to shadow him while the other four players aligned themselves in a zone.

“It was probably one of our better games — maybe our best game,” Cook said. “We have a pretty good offense for teams that play me like that. We’ll probably see it again.

“And when we get Callan going like he was, we usually don’t lose.”

Oh, yes. Overshadowed by Cook’s exemplary performance was 5-11 sophomore Callan Wilkins, who nailed 8 of 13 shots, including 5 of 13 long balls, for 21 points.

“We hit a couple of shots and they couldn’t really come back on us,” Wilkins said.

Carlquist, meanwhile, was unconcerned with his team’s reliance on the 3-ball — a tendency that has hurt it at times — or its scoring imbalance. Aside from Cook and Wilkins, no one scored more than Cody Latimer’s seven points.

“It’s not intentional,” Carlquist said. “In Callan’s situation, he just happens to shoot the 3 better than he shoots the 2.

“What you do now, is you enjoy this one and you move on. You know you’re going to have to come back and play again the next day against somebody that’s probably really good.”

As Goldendale was Wednesday.
