YAKIMA, Wash. -- Rachel Strand led four King’s players in double figures as
the top-ranked Knights beat River View 62-42 in the first round of the Class
1A girls basketball tournament on Wednesday in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Jen Galliher added 13 points, and Christina Wikstrom and Hayley Zevenbergen
had 12 each as King’s pulled out to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter and
was never challenged.
"You have to get by the first game to do anything,” King's coach Eric
Rasmussen said. “They are a very physical team. We knew they would pound the
boards and I’m really happy we didn’t give them very many second chances.”
Rasmussen had to be pleased with the play of his defense as well. The
Knights limited the Panthers to just 34 percent shooting -- 29 percent in
the first half -- and forced 20 turnovers on the morning.
The Knights (22-2), meanwhile, made 51 percent of their shots (26 of 51).
The preparation emphasis in a short week has to be on what your team does
well, Rasmussen said. That’s why the first thing he wrote on the board
preparing for the pre-game talk, as it is every game, was rebounding.
“We knew they had good size and the film we saw and the people we talked to
made it obvious they had success when they had second chances.”
Strand pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, and Hayley Zevenbergen added
seven.
Jennifer Burlingame paced River View with eight points, and Sara Shelton
added seven.
