Brewster on the Money in Overtime
By
ROGER UNDERWOOD Why the fuss? Because Brewster had just survived a 48-46
double-overtime gut-wrencher against Colfax in what many considered to be a
meeting of two of the top girls teams in the Class 1A state tournament in
the SunDome. Whatever, it offered surprises of all manner. There was senior superstar Jeni Boesel leaving just about everyone flabbergasted when, with 26 seconds left in regulation, she missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with the score tied 43-43. There was 5-foot-11 junior Bridget Hauswirth coming off the bench for six big rebounds and, in the waning seconds, one huge block. And last but not least, there was Kaylan Crane. The 5-7 junior intercepted a pass, dribbled the length of the court and later said, happily, "So was I," when a reporter expressed amazement that her tightly defended layup had somehow crawled over the rim for the winning basket with 21 seconds left in the second OT. "We shot like crap," Bryan Boesel, Jeni's uncle, said amid the din. "I know that and our girls know that. But defense and free-throw shooting win championships, and we were lucky tonight because we didn't shoot our free throws very well, either." Well, Jeni Boesel did make one of two with five seconds to play in the second overtime, after which Kelsey Van Tine's 35-footer at the buzzer made all in attendance hold their breath before bouncing off the iron. The victory improved Brewster to 22-4 and advanced the Bears into a 4 p.m. semifinal Friday against 23-2 King's. It also avenged a 57-48 loss to Colfax (24-4), the defending state champion, in regional play. The Bears, who had beaten Class 3A tournament participant West Valley of Yakima early in the season, were then forced to defeat Freeman in a loser-out game to reach state. "We had so many players step up," said Jeni Boesel, a 5-8 senior who will continue her career at the University of Portland. "And we showed more emotion in this game, like we did when we were sophomores. We'll sleep good tonight, I think." Boesel, despite early foul trouble and a subpar shooting night (10 for 32), still led all scorers with 24 points. Teammate Michelle Tostenrude added 13, including Brewster's only basket of the first overtime. Kristin Watts had 15 points and Van Tine 12 for Colfax, which led from the early minutes until Boesel's 3-pointer from the CBA line tied it at 43-43 with 39 seconds in the fourth quarter. Each team managed only one hoop in the first OT, then Allie Swan put the Bulldogs ahead 46-45 with a free throw at 3:22 of the second. Following Crane's steal and basket, which put Brewster up 47-46, Colfax got the ball inside to the 5-10 Swan, but her shot was deflected by Hauswirth and went out of bounds to Brewster. Boesel, who received the inbounds pass, was fouled at 0:05.
