Tonasket Too Much for Cle Elum
By
ROGER UNDERWOOD The Warriors' demise was simply the collective efficiency of a good Tonasket team. Make that a very good Tonasket team. "They've beaten Brewster twice," Cle Elum coach Ryan Hill noted after his Warriors dropped a 53-36 Class 1A state quarterfinal game in the Yakima Valley SunDome. "They set good screens for each other, they went to the basket well and they did a nice job. But I was happy with our effort." To be sure, the Warriors gave it the old college try. They scrapped and scrambled as best they could, and Hill noted that their season was not at all lost. "I told them there in the locker room," he said, "that at the start of the season if you'd told us that we'd have one game at state to get a trophy, we'd have all had big smiles on our faces." At 2 p.m. Friday, Cle Elum (18-7) will meet Napavine (17-8) in a loser-out game. If the Warriors win, they will play at noon Saturday in a game for fourth and seventh places. Tonasket (22-4), meanwhile, advanced to a 7:30 p.m. semifinal opposite Onalaska (19-7). "We played a pretty nice game tonight," Tigers coach Gary Smith said. "Last night we were a little shaky, but tonight we did a better overall job. I was pleased." Little wonder. Guard Jessica Clarkson, who drove hard to the hoop all night, led all scorers with 15 points, left-handed forward Krissy Call had 14 despite some idle time due to foul trouble and guard Shayne Freeman added 11 points and four assists. Senior Rudi Christian and junior Heather Lanphere scored 12 points each to lead Cle Elum and senior Sarah Swenson added six points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Warriors stayed within striking distance well into the third quarter, pulling to within 38-28 as Christian scored on a layup and then followed with a 3-pointer. But Tonasket scored the final four points of the period for a 44-30 lead, then added the first six of the fourth quarter to make it 50-30. "We played hard and we were competitive," Hill said. "But against a team like that, you'd better have your A game."
