Colfax Slips Past Dayton at Buzzer

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Jenna Vuletich hit a layup with six seconds left, and a last-second layup by Dayton caromed off the rim to give Colfax a 43-41 consolation-round victory Friday at the Class 1A girls state tournament.

Vuletich’s shot broke a 41-41 tie that Dayton had forced with 33 seconds to play when Chelsie Ashley’s layin brought Dayton back after entering the fourth quarter trailing 37-28.

After Vuletich’s shot and a timeout, Amber Steinhoff took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the court. But she came in to the basket too fast, and the ball rolled off her fingers, hit the back of the rim and bounced off as the buzzer sounded.

Kristin Watts led Colfax with 12 points and Kelsie Van Tine added 10 and a game-high nine rebounds. Watts and Allie Swan each had eight rebounds for the defending state champs.

Trisha Heinrich scored 10 points for Dayton, which closed its season at 15-11.

Colfax (25-4) will play at noon Saturday for fourth and seventh places.
