Cle Elum Moves to Trophy Round

What had started out as cruise control for Cle Elum had turned into herky-jerky stop-and-go, and that meant it was time for Rudi Christian to take the wheel.

“We kind of got wrapped up in the excitement,” the Warriors’ steady senior leader said after helping her team clinch a Class 1A state tournament trophy Friday by nipping Napavine 54-51. “We had to keep our composure.
“That’s kind of my strong suit. Boost the other girls’ confidence, that’s what I like to do.”

No better way to do that than make the critical points, which Christian did in lifting Cle Elum into Saturday’s 4th-7th place game against Colfax, which eked out a 54-51 victory over Dayton on Friday.

After Napavine erased a 10-point Cle Elum lead — a comeback that kicked into gear, not coincidentally, when Christian left the game for two minutes with a mild ankle sprain — the Tigers grabbed a 44-41 lead on a Katie Carns
3-pointer and a layup by Brooke Diehl.

A putback by Heather Lanphere pulled the Warriors to within a point and, with 1:35 remaining in the game, Christian grabbed a loose ball and banked it in for a Cle Elum lead.

“Ashley (Berner) tipped it to me,” Christian said, deflecting the credit. “She knocked it out of the (Napavine) girl’s hands right to me.”

Diehl put the Tigers back in front with a 6-foot jumper, Christian was sent to the foul line twice in the final 1:15. She was only about a 50 percent free-throw shooter during the regular season, but Cle Elum coach Ryan Hill knew the ball was in good hands.

“She’s our leader out there. She’s a clutch player,” Hill said. “Rudi is definitely somebody I’d want at the free throw line in that kind of situation.”

Four shots ... four swishes. The first two put Cle Elum in front for good, and a driving layup by Lanphere and two free throws by Teresa Glondo helped keep them there. A 3-pointer by Tiger Coral Jeidy kept Napavine in it to the final second.

That the Warriors were able to offset an overall off-shooting day (18 for 56, 32 percent) and still advance was impressive. The normally deadeye Lanphere scored 20 points, but it came on 6-for-17 shooting.

“Yeah, I haven’t been on for a couple of days now,” Lanphere said.

The only Warrior whose shooting was on was Christian, whose 19 points included 6-for-11 accuracy from the field; her teammates were a combined 12-for-45.

That’s why it hurt Cle Elum so much when, with the Warriors up 27-17 in the third period, Christian rolled her ankle and had to leave the game. Napavine scored six straight points in her absence, then keep the momentum in the fourth period behind Diehl, who scored eight of her 12 points over a five-minute span.

“That was pretty scary,” Lanphere said of seeing their lead dissipate. “We had to make sure not to foul, because that would just make it easy for them. We played pretty good defense toward the end.”

So Cle Elum will go home with a trophy regardless of what happens Saturday against defending champion Colfax.

“Our goal mainly was just to get here (to state),” Hill said. “And after we got here, I kind of asked them to change their goal to playing on Saturday. We’ve pretty much achieved all our goals.

“League champs, district champs, and fourth or seventh at state.

“That’s something special.”
