Brewster Tops King's for Finals Shot

Michelle Tostenrude has spent the majority of her Brewster career comfortably in the shadows of high-scoring teammate Jeni Boesel.

Given the chance to step to center stage Friday night in the Class 1A semifinals, Tostenrude took the ball and performed like she had been there he entire life.

Tostenrude had 15 points -- 10 in the fourth quarter while Brewster was holding off a King’s rally -- as the Bears advanced to the state championship game for the third time in four years with a 68-52 win over the Knights.

“Michelle had only taken about six 3s all season, but I’ve been telling her all year to take more,” Brewster coach Bryan Boesel said. “In the last two games, she’s blossomed.”

The win avenges a Brewster loss to King’s in the 2002 semifinals, and puts the Bears in a position to win a third state title in four years Saturday night against Tonasket The Bears were third in 2002 after the semifinal loss.

Tostenrude’s performance kept the Bears in front down the stretch, but it was Boesel -- a three-time all-tourney performer and two-time MVP -- who put Brewster in the driver’s seat with a scintillating first half.

She had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the Bears roared to a 34-13 lead at halftime. Boesel finished with 23 points, setting a tournament career scoring record in the process. Her total of 373 points eclipsed Susan Anderson of Mount Baker, who totaled 350 between 1983-86.

Leading 16-9 with 5:29 remaining, Brewster went on a 20-4 tear -- Boesel scoring seven straight and nine during the run -- to take a 34-13 halftime lead.

The Bears stretched the lead to 38-15 and then King’s went on a 3-point barrage -- getting two each from Rachel Strand and Christina Wikstrom in a four-minute stretch -- and scored the last nine points of the period to cut the Brewster margin to eight, 45-37.

Brewster struck right back, opening the final period with a 13-2 dash -- including a long field goal and a rainbow three by Tostenrude -- to re-establish control at 58-39.

From there, the Bears kept control by calmly draining free throw after free throw -- 12 of 18 in the final 1:59.
