This Time, It's a Good Break

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

The A buzzer-beating, half-court shot gave Hoquiam an emotional lift, and the lead, going into the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies’ 48-46 consolation-bracket victory over Lakeside. It was the kind of shot often later described as “the shot that broke their backs.”

You wouldn’t expect that sort of analogy, though, from Jeff Wayman, the Hoquiam senior who launched the big 3-pointer, since he knows what a real backbreaker feels like.

He spent six months in a back brace three years ago after ... breaking his back.

“It was kind of an overuse thing,” he said of a break at the lumbar-4 spot in the lower back. “A lot of gymnasts have it. I got hit in football — that was pretty much the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Wayman definitely had a big part in breaking the Eagles’ backs — oops, there’s that line again — with his 17-point, eight-rebound, two-assist performance, despite spending much of the night in foul difficulty.

Wayman eventually fouled out with 11 seconds up and the Grizzlies holding a two-point lead. No, it didn’t break their backs.

FOUL FOUL SHOOTING: At next year’s pre-tournament ice cream social, perhaps another activity should be added: a free-throw shooting clinic.

On the first day of the 2A girls tournament, the 16 teams combined to make just 47.6 percent of free throws. And these are the best teams in the state!

It got a bit better on Thursday — 55.4 percent. But there were some real anomalies for teams that usually shoot well. East Valley and Chelan, last year’s state finalists, both missed 20 free throws on opening day. Ephrata missed 18 on Thursday and Woodland and Chelan both clanked 16.

Interestingly, the teams that shot the most did the best. Tenino and Hoquiam, neither of which made it to trophy day, each made a tournament-high 32 free throws during the first two days and both shot better than 61 percent.

Chelan, which will play for fourth and seventh Saturday, missed a gaudy 36 free throws in the first two rounds but made up for with volume, connecting on 30 of 66.

Still, as always, the foul line has been key. All eight winners on Thursday outscored their opponents in free throws. The winners were 114-for-193 while the losers were 55-for-112.

And the 3-point line by comparison? Didn’t seem to matter. Thursday’s winners and losers each made 18 treys.

FAST BREAKING: Ralph Bowman has been the statistician for Pullman High for 37 years, doing both boys and girls basketball, not to mention a few other sports as well. He told athletic administrators at the beginning of the year that this would be his last year keeping numbers for the basketball teams, and it has turned out to be quite the long and fruitful one, with both Greyhound teams playing in Saturday’s finals. ... Fred Peete’s 28 field-goal attempts were one short of the tournament single-game record 29 hoisted last year by Lynden Christian’s Paul Hafford. ...In their loss to Chelan, Tenino’s girls set the single-game record for most 3-pointers attempted with 31, breaking by two the record set in 1998 by Elma and tied in 2001 by Ephrata (both times, coincidentally, against Lakeside). Unfortunately for the Beavers, they made only seven.
