  Zillah's Hungry For More

After missing 2003 tournament, Lady Leopards are back
and aiming for a state-tournament trophy

It seems like a lot longer than two years since Zillah’s girls basketball team has been in the state tournament.

After missing 2003, the Leopards are back, led by five seniors who were on the 2002 team, one of only two teams in nine trips to not get a trophy.

Cherie Perrault, Jennifer Hall, Kendra Alcala, Carrie Calhoun and Jennifer Griffin all were on the roster in 2002. All are hungry for a chance to play for a state trophy under first-year coach Tony Fritz.

Griffin and Hall both averaged about eight points a contest in 2002 as sophomores, while Calhoun averaged 4.5 points a game on that team.

Now as seniors, it is their show. The 6-foot-2 Griffin leads the team in scoring at 12.7 points a game — along with 9.1 rebounds a game — while Hall and Calhoun combine for almost 16 points a contest.

And Fritz believes sticking with what helped his team establish a 21-2 record will be the key to success this week. He hopes a relative lack of experience will not be a problem.

“I think they will try to use our lack of experience against us, try and get us down early and see how we respond,” he said. “We have to keep playing smart and aggressive.”

Colfax is about as battle tested as they come, with players from teams that have finished second, first and fourth. Now, however, they are all in uniform at the same time.

Natalie Shaw (17.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Kristin Watts (12.5 ppg, 3.5 apg) are together again for the first time since 2001 when they were freshmen on the team that finished second to Brewster.

Coach Corey Baerlocher is concerned about his team’s ability to handle what he has dubbed Zillah’s Towers of Power, Griffin, Hall and Calhoun.

But the long and short of the whole thing may come down to a battle between Colfax’s point guard, 5-foot-10 Jenna Vuletich, and Zillah’s point, 5-foot-1 Cherie Perrault.

Perrault is responsible for 5.6 assists a game as well as 3.5 steals. If Vuletich can keep her from getting the ball to the other three, Baerlocher say, Zillah’s task gets tougher.
