Early Wakeup, Early Win for Leps

Zillah’s Shane Stonemetz is -- by his own admission -- not a morning person.

Given what he did to Winlock’s Cody Rouse in the boys opener, Rouse probably wishes Stonemetz was.

Fueled by a 5:30 a.m. wakeup call and breakfast at his favorite eatery, the 5-foot-9 Stonemetz held the 6-foot-5 Rouse to just two points in the second half as the Leopards pulled away for a 47-36 win over the Cardinals.

But equally as important, Stonemetz was second on his team in scoring with 13 points -- nearly three times his average -- including nine in the first half when the Leopards were trying to get their transition game going.

“I might not be our leading scorer, but I have more experience than any other guy,” Stonemetz said. “I knew today I had to be a leader and step up.”

Part of that stepping up was setting his alarm for a time it had likely seen before. And -- in a departure from the norm that will no doubt stun members of the ZHS faculty -- to be wide awake in time for the team’s shootaround at 7 a.m.

So after getting up early, which he never does, and eating breakfast -- also a rarity -- Stonemetz was a bundle of energy. Rouse was the unwitting recipient of Stonemetz’s undivided attention.

"We told Stoney all week he would be taking Rouse, and he did a great job," Leopards coach Doug Burge said. "We held their big two to 20 points, and that was what we felt we could do."

For the third time in three years Zillah drew an early game. Burge again had his team ready, this time with a game plan designed to handle the high-scoring twosome of Kevin Hauschild and Rouse.

“They were big and physical. Good team," Zillah center Justin Ross said. “Pretty much every team in the state is gonna be taller than we are. But we’ve got speed, toughness and heart.”

"Anytime we hold a team to 36 points, I like our chances," Burge said. "I felt like if we had played well in the first half, we would have been up eight or 10 points. They did some things and we couldn't get transition baskets."

Taller Winlock (16-9) dominated the boards, outrebounding Zillah 32-21, but the Cardinals also committed 20 turnovers as the Leopards’ defense came up with 11 steals. Kelly Anderson had five steals for Zillah.

Hauschild led Winlock with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Duran Torrez scored a game-high 15 points and made 8 of 8 free-throw tries for Zillah.
