Brewster Rolls to 72-42 Victory

YAKIMA, Wash. -- David Pendergraft scored 19 points and sixth man Ross Brown came off the bench to score 15 as top-ranked Brewster -- the defending champion and prohibitive favorite -- breezed into the boys Class 1A state basketball semifinals with a 72-42 win over University Prep at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Bears will face Freeman in Friday night’s semifinals at 7:30. University Prep will face Bellevue Christian, a 60-37 loser to Freeman, in an afternoon consolation game.

The Bears (25-1) have not lost to a 1A team since the 2002 state tournament when Pendergraft was sidelined with a broken left wrist. The teams only loss was in January to Class 3A semifinalist West Valley in the Tourneytown.com Shootout.

Brewster blew the game open with a 26-6 run in the second period. Life Christian trailed just 13-12 after one quarter, but Brown came off the bench to score eight points and Pendergraft hit six of 11 shots from the field for 15 points.

Five Bears in total scored in double figures. Hawkins Gebbers had 12, Michael Taylor 10 and Ryne Phillips 10.

Ian McCormick had 12 points to lead University Prep.
