Bears overcome slow-down game, beat Freeman 51-28

Freeman, the only 1A team to stay close to Brewster this year — a 59-54 bi-district loss to the Bears — made it appear for a while as if it could happen again.

But this time Brewster had other plans, and the defending champions earned a return trip to the Class 1A boys state title game with a 51-28 victory over the Scotties on Friday night.

Jon Dresback, the only senior on the Scotties’ squad, buried four of his first five shots, two of them 3-pointers, to give Freeman an early 10-8 lead.

At the quarter break, though, Brewster coach Tim Taylor switched up his defense to put his son, 6-2 sophomore Michael, on Dresback. Taylor held Dresback scoreless for the next 1 1/2 quarters as the Bears put the game away with a 24-6 run.

“He was getting inside, and I’m a little taller (than Hawkins Gebbers, who was defending Dresback in the first quarter),” Taylor said of the defensive switch. “I just tried to beat him to the ball. My dad’s been drilling that into for years, beat him to the ball.”

Taylor also scored 13 points, while two-time 1A player of the year David Pendergraft finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Guards Gebbers and Ryne Phillips combined for 12 rebounds and seven assists.

Dresback finished with 19 points, but missed 11 of his final 15 shots from the field.

The championship game against N.W. Christian will be a rematch of the bi-district final, which Brewster (26-1) won 78-52.

“They’re tough,” Taylor said of the Crusaders. “I played with their two best players (Joel Ryman and Robert Lippman) last summer, and they both told you, ‘We’ll see you in the finals.’”

They were right.
