King's Rolls in
Overtime, 60-50

It took awhile for the King's Knights to get their coach's messages. One and
a half games, in fact, by Marv Morris' count.
Once they did, though, the Knights emerged from an
offensive deep freeze Saturday to defeat Freeman 60-50 in overtime for third
place in the Class 1A state boys tournament in the SunDome.
"I got a little upset at halftime today," Morris said.
"I had been telling the kids to go inside and stop messing around shooting
threes (3-pointers), like we'd done yesterday (in a 44-35 loss to N.W.
Christian). Once we did that, things went a lot better for us."
Good enough for an 18-10 record. Freeman, which claimed
the sixth-place trophy, finished 19-13.
King's trailed through most of the first half and faced
a 26-15 deficit early in the third quarter. They pulled to within 33-32 by
the end of the period, then took the lead until two free throws by the
Scotties' Malcolm Soelberg tied the score 48-48 with 44 seconds left in
regulation.
The Knights had possession during the final seconds,
but Freeman's Jason Bailey deflected the ball into the backcourt as King's
was setting up a play for a potential winning shot.
In overtime, though, King's opened with an 8-0 run and
was never threatened.
Chris Faidley, the tournament's career points leader,
led all scorers with 23 points and also topped his team in rebounding with
nine. Inside players Calvin Fujii and Josh Drenth added 15 and 12 points,
respectively, and Drenth had eight boards.
All of Drenth's points and nine of Fujii's came after
intermission.
Jon Dresbach, Freeman's lone senior, scored 17 points
and Soelberg had 13.
