Faidley Leads King's Past Granger

Chris Faidley is a big-game player. The kind of player who wants the ball with his team's fortunes on the line.

That is the reason that King’s is playing in Thursday's Class 1A boys state tournament after a 56-42 win over Granger in the first round at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Wednesday.

The talented senior guard got his teammates involved early to loosen them up, then took over against Granger in the second half, scoring 12 of his 21 points in the third period of the Knights 56-42 win over the Spartans.

Faidley was zero-for-four from the floor in the first half, but hit all six free throws he attempted and pulled down five rebounds. In the second half, he hit six of eight from the field and added two assists and two steals.

“Faidley is a big-time player,” Granger coach Davis Gibb aaid afterward. “He killed us in the third quarter.”

Thanks to a strong second-period performance off the bench from Josh Drenth -- eight points and five rebounds in just under eight minutes -- the Knights had established some separation from Granger by halftime.

The 6-foot-5 Drenth was impossible for Granger to stop offensively. Almost as importantly, the man he was guarding didn’t pose enough of a threat for Drenth to follow as he moved around. With him camped out in the key, the Knights dominated the boards, 34-21.

By the time Faidley was finished with his third-period display, the game was essentially over.

“Chris is one of the most unbelievable pure shooters I have ever seen,” King’s coach Marv Morris said. “It seems like he shoots his best in the toughest situations.”

Drenth had an early impact for the Knights. He entered the game with 2:48 to play in the first quarter with his team trailing 11-6. He scored the team's next eight points, and King's never trailed again.

"He took over for a stretch, didn't he?" Morris said of Drenth, who finished with 14 points. "He got some boards, he got about six points in that stretch.

"That was a very important time for us," Morris added.

Drenth made 7 of 11 shots for the Knights (16-9).

Granger senior Chris Cardenas, the SCAC West MVP, was limited to four points in the first half and 13 overall. Robert Cardenas led the Spartans with 15 points.

For King’s, it was the 12th win in 13 games that Faidley has played in in the SunDome, including state titles in 2002 and 2003. For Granger, the loss was the third first-day loss in as many trips under fourth-year coach David Gibb.
