Vikings Hold Off White Swan

White Swan’s match-up with Bellevue Christian came down to a match-up of A
games.
Cougars coach Ray Funk knew that if his two standout players -- Chris Jones
and Kenneth Fiander -- brought their A games, his team had a chance to get
only its second first-round win in five trips to state since 1999.
The problem for White Swan is that all three of Bellevue Christian’s
standouts -- Jeffrey Downs, Nate Hendricks and Bryan Egley -- brought their
A games as well.
The result, somewhat predictably, was a 56-49 BC win on Wednesday in the
first round of the Class 1A state tournament at the SunDome. It was a game
in which the Cougars had more than their share of chances.
The game turned on the Cougars needing to keep Jones -- their inside power
source -- out of foul trouble when he picked up his second infraction just
before the halfway point of the second period.
He went out with 4:56 left and White Swan holding a two-point lead. Downs
and Hendricks took over, combining for all 10 of the Vikings' points in a
10-2 run that made it 31-25 at intermission.
“We had to take him out because we didn’t want him to get a third foul,”
Funk said. “Those two lay-ups in the last minute really hurt.”
The BC fluctuated in the second half -- as much as 12, as few as five -- but
the Cougars couldn’t take advantage of the chances they had.
“The game came down to us not being able to hit out shots close to the
basket,” Funk said. “Every time we had a chance, we didn’t get it done.”
Downs led three Bellevue Christian players in double
figures with 17 points. Nate Hendricks added 14 points and Bryan Egly 12 for
the Vikings (18-5), who will face Freeman in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m.
quarterfinals.
BC finished with a 51.3 percent shooting game (20 of
39), including a 6-for-10 effort from behind the 3-point arc.
The Vikings also dominated the boards, outrebounding
the Cougars 32-24. Downs pulled down nine rebounds and Avery Gorter had
seven.
Fiander led White Swan (16-8) with a game-high 19
points and seven rebounds, and Jones chipped in 15 points.
