Late Run Bolsters Leps
in 64-47 Win

In barely more than a minute, the Zillah Leopards had seen a
once-comfortable lead shaved from a dozen points to just four, and Leopards
coach Tony Fritz called a timeout to set up a plan.
And then the unplanned happened. And it paid off.
Sophomore Gentry Affholter swished a 15-footer behind a
screen from Rondelle Guthrie, and a minute later hit Guthrie for a
fast-break layup that triggered a 10-point Zillah run as the Leopards rolled
to a 64-47 victory Thursday over Cedar Park Christian.
“That was not the shot we wanted,” Fritz said of
Affholter’s jumper. “When she put it up, I was going, ‘What are you doing —
great shot!’”
After that shot, the Leopards went right back to what
they had done so well in the first half — working it inside. In the first
half, posts Carrie Calhoun and Jennifer Griffin had combined to shoot
9-for-13 from inside the lane while the rest of the team was a combined
4-for-17.
“They did a great job of posting up and reading the
defense,” said Affholter, who had a game-high six assists.
Calhoun would finish with 23 points on 10-for-13
shooting, and Griffin’s 11 rebounds helped Zillah dominate the boards.
“They’re not a very big team,” Calhoun said of the
Eagles (18-9), “and we’ve got use our strength. And our strength is our
size.”
And, in the late going, defense — specifically that of
senior forward Chelsea Delvo on CPC guard Monique Lee, who had 21 points
after three quarters.
Zillah switched to a box-and-one, with Delvo — “a great
one-on-one defender,” Fritz said — covering Lee in the final period. Lee got
off just two shots the rest of the way and finished with 24 points.
“Chelsea Delvo came out and dominated their best
player,” Calhoun said.
Friday, Zillah will play Seattle Christian, a 37-33
winner over Overlake, with the winner clinching a spot in the
fifth/eighth-place game.
“That was the team that played all year, the one that
was 21-1 at one point,” Fritz said of his Leopards
(22-3), who had dropped two straight. “They played hard, they were the
aggressor. Our last two games ... trust me, I pulled my hair out until 3
o’clock this morning going over film and figuring out how to get them back
to this.”
