Inside Game Lifts L-R, 55-50

Lind-Ritzville’s three-headed monster -- Tiffany Starring, Jessica Heidenreich and Brittney Kubik -- were too much for King’s to handle Thursday night in the Class 1A girls state tournament quarterfinals, and the Broncos powered their way into the semifinals with a 55-50 win at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Kubik had 19, Starring 15 and Heidenreich 11 as Lind-Ritz continued to steer a course toward a rematch with league and district rival Colfax, a winner earlier in the day. The teams have played six times this season -- with Colfax winning four -- including the Northeast District and Bi-District title games.

“They just pounded us inside,” King’s coach Eric Rasmussen said. “We can’t give up that much stuff inside and expect to win.

“We know we can’t give up 55 points and win,” he continued. “We thought the score had to be in the hi 30s or low 40s for us to have a chance to win.”

Kings came into the tournament having given up more than 50 points just twice. That was in back-to-back January losses to Cascade and Riverside of Canada.

Lind-Ritz, the 2003 B champion, is now 25-5. King’s, the 2002 champion and a semifinalist in 2003, falls to 21-5.

The two teams traded jabs like prize fighters throughout the first half. Neither team had a lead bigger than three points -- each team led by that amount once -- and King’s went to the locker room with a 28-25 lead thanks in large part to 13 points from sophomore guard Caitlyn Faidley.

Lind-Ritz had 20 points in the half from its big three, Kubik leading the way with 10.

“We knew we were going to have to do a lot of high-low stuff,” Broncos coach Randy Heidenreich said. “They have very athletic guards so we felt that was our best chance.”

The Broncos kept dumping the ball into the low post to Kubik or to Starring on the wing in the third period, getting exactly the results Heidenreich wanted. The pair combined for 12 of Lind-Ritz’s 15 in the period.

Meanwhile, defensively the Broncos held King’s to 18 percent shooting -- two for 11 -- in turning the three-point halftime deficit into a four-point lead.

Faidley -- a first-team All Chinook League team selection and the sister of Chris Faidley, the high scoring guard on the boys team -- kept firing away from long-range, hitting five 3-pointers. Two of those were in the final period, both cutting six-point deficits to three points as King’s scrambled to make a comeback. Faidley had 12 of her game-high 26 points for King’s in the final quarter.
