Colfax girls basketball is not beautiful. Just efficient.

Friday's early semifinal game.

The Bulldogs’ game is not about picture-perfect jump
shots, artful passing and dancers’ footwork. It’s about sweaty, panting,
in-your-face, pressing defense that never stops. That’s why Colfax will play
Saturday night for its second Class 1A state championship in three years, in
what amounts to Game Seven of the World Series of 2003-04 1A girls
basketball:
Colfax vs. Lind-Ritzville. For the seventh time this
year.
The story of the Bulldogs’ 43-18 semifinal trouncing
of Napavine can be told in a time span: 11 minutes and 43 seconds. That’s
how long the Tigers, flustered into exasperation by the Bulldogs’ pressure,
went without scoring from midway through first period into the third period.
A 18-5 halftime margin stretched to 38-15, the Bulldogs (26-4) went to
wholesale substitution and had a scare when Natalie Shaw went down with what
looked like a potential knee injury.
It wasn’t, said Shaw, whose 7-for-11, 17-point night
was the highlight of an otherwise ugly offensive night for Colfax.
“I think I just hyperextended it. I was just more
scared than anything,” said Shaw, who missed the second half of last season
with a knee injury. “Even if it was hurt, I’d play (in the championship
game).”
As for a seventh game against Lind-Ritzville — which
topped Winlock 51-39 in Friday’s second semifinal — Bulldogs coach Corey Baerlocher was philosophical.
“It’s just one game,” said the coach, whose Bulldogs
have won four of the previous six. “We don’t look at it as beating them four
times in one year. It’s just one game. They know what we’ll be doing, and we
know what they’ll be doing.”
