Napavine Takes Third,
43-35

Trisha Kaut, the unquestioned leader of the youngest lineup in the girls’
tournament, wasn’t having a good game. So she took it over.
The 5-7 junior point guard scored 10 of Napavine’s last
11 points as the Tigers — who could just be the team to watch next year
— held off Southwest District rival Winlock 43-35 in the game deciding third
and sixth places in the 1A girls tournament.
“Nothing was falling for me, so I was starting to get
frustrated,” said Kaut, who had only two points going into the fourth
quarter. “I hadn’t been hitting from the outside, so I just tried to take it
to the hole.”
She did just that, driving for three final-period
layups and drawing enough fouls to sink four free throws. She also led the
Tigers’ opportunistic press with seven steals and grabbed a team-high nine
rebounds, helping offset Winlock’s profound height advantage.
“Trisha’s always been our leader,” said Napavine coach
Shane Schutz, whose team finished 23-4. “That’s what Trish can do — she’s
capable of taking over a game.”
The Tigers also got a spark from sophomore left-hander
Raychel Wilson, whose game-high 17 points included a coast-to-coast drive
for a pull-up, buzzer-beating 12-footer over towering Winlock center Summer
Sykes to end the third quarter.
Sykes, the Cardinals’ 6-2 senior standout, pulled down
13 rebounds, five of them on the offensive end, but shot just 4-for-12 from
the field and finished with 12 points. Forward Autumn Spencer led Winlock
(19-8) with 13 points.
“This is just a small stop for us, though,” said Kaut,
whose team doesn’t have a single senior. “We’re ready for the next step: the
championship.”
