YAKIMA, Wash. -- Connell hit two 3-pointers with less than a minute to play
but couldn’t get off one final shot, and Chelan held on to beat the Eagles
50-49 Friday in a loser-out contest in the Class 2A boys state tournament.
Chelan, which led by as many as seven points early in
the fourth quarter, had the opportunity to expand its lead, but Lane Nelson
missed both free throws with four seconds left. Connell controlled the
rebound, but, after a timeout, couldn’t get the ball upcourt in time for a
final shot.
Calin Schell led the Goats (19-7) with 20 points and 13
rebounds, and Payson West chipped in 10 points.
Steven Dorman led Connell (15-11) with 17 points and
Kris Knight added 13. John Conrad had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Chelan will meet Cashmere at noon Saturday in the
fourth/seventh-place game.
