Blaine Prevails in 2OT
TOURNEYTOWN.COM
Jake Gilmore’s two free throws in the second overtime put his team ahead for
good as Blaine outlasted Nooksack Valley 48-44 Saturday to earn fifth place
in the Class 2A boys state tournament.
Gilmore, who finished with a game-high 19 points,
scored four in the second OT. He made 7 of 16 shots, including 5 of 9 in the
second half.
NV had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer with
11 seconds left, but a turnover and another Blaine free throw sealed the
outcome.
"I thought the big thing was trying to keep our
composure and make some free throws there at the end," Blaine coach Dan
Rucker said. "I kept telling the kids to keep moving in the offense and
getting shots."
It was the fourth meeting between the two teams this
season, with each team winning two. Nooksack Valley won the Northwest
District title game 46-37.
"Someone said we could have gone back home and played
this at (Lynden Christian)," Rucker joked.
Ryan Alexander and Doug Goldsby added nine and eight
points, respectively, for the Borderites, who finished with a 18-8 record
and won a trophy for the fifth time in six years.
Bruce Holtz led the Pioneers (19-7) with 10 points, and
Kyle Mitchell added eight. Darin Vinkes pulled down a game-high nine
rebounds.
The Pioneers' eighth-place finish earned them their
third 2A basketball trophy, following last year's title, and the 16th state
trophy in school history.
