Till Leads Cards to Third

By ROGER UNDERWOOD

That Medical Lake made school history in the Class 2A state tournament is undeniable. How much history depends on who you talk to.

"We're the first 4-0 team to finish third," coach Arnold Brown said after Saturday's 66-59 conquest of Lakeside in the SunDome, a victory that actually was the Cardinals' third of the tournament. The third-place finish was in fact the school's highest here, after two runnerup showings in Class 1A.

Brown, of course, was referring to Friday night's semifinal loss to East Valley, a 51-50 Red Devils triumph in which the scoring concluded via a disputed foul.

"At least, in our minds we were 4-0," Brown said, smiling. "We'd like to meet up with Hoquiam during the summer or maybe two weeks from now. Our guys would definitely like to play them."

Brown wasn't particularly animated in his remarks, but seemed convinced nonetheless.

And proud of his team's performance after a disappointing loss.

"We were still a little depressed after last night," Brown said, "but I think our guys kind of worked their way through it. And I think we wore Lakeside down a little at the end."

To be sure, the Cardinals (22-5) put away Lakeside (14-13) with a 14-4 run that started with 1:32 left in the third quarter and concluded with 3:29 to go in the fourth. It erased a 42-40 deficit and gave them a 54-46 lead.

Dur Till led a balanced Medical Lake offense with 17 points and four assists, Steven Wesley had 16 points and five assists, Kevin Schmidt totaled 13 points and Michael Perez added 12.

Kyle Schreibeis, Lakeside's lone senior, led all scorers with 25 points and added five assists.

Medical Lake outshot the Eagles 50 percent to 36 percent and outrebounded them 27-20, but Lakeside stayed close on the strength of 10-for-23 shooting from 3-point range.
