Foster coach Marcus Callero came to the state tournament convinced
that his team’s pressing defensive style would create problems for all but
the most accomplished opposing guards.

On Wednesday, he met Logan Erickson, Joel Noland and
Kyle Schreibeis of the Lakeside Eagles.
With the aforementioned trio repeatedly breaking
Foster’s press and the Bulldogs' shooting stranded somewhere on Snoqualmie
Pass, Lakeside knocked Foster into the consolation bracket with a 60-46 win
Wednesday at the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Foster, which has lost three straight tournament games
dating back to its last appearance in 1999, will play Blaine today at 12:30
p.m. in the consolation bracket. Lakeside, which won its tournament opener
for the third straight year, will play Connell in the quarterfinals at 7:30.
“They were just good enough to break our pressure,” Callero said. “They were
a good, disciplined team and they could handle our stuff.”
Not only did they handle it, but Noland cut the Bulldogs half-court defense
up to the tune of seven assists and Schreibeis grabbed seemingly every
rebound -- totaling 15, with four assists -- in sight as Lakeside pulled
away with a late run, outscoring Foster 17-1 in the final 4:28.
“We had a pretty good scouting report on them,” Callero said. “I was
surprised with how quick they were.”
Compounding things for Foster was 27.6 percent field goal shooting,
including five for 21 from behind the 3-point line. In the second half, the
Bulldogs hit just six of 28 field goal attempts, 21.4 percent.
Foster was behind just two, 45-43 when light-scoring Bret Britton hit a
lay-in off an assist from Noland with 4:28 left. The Eagles pulled away with
the only Bulldog point in the final stretch being a free throw by Amsalu
Abera.
“It’s been that way the last couple weeks,” Lakeside coach Ron Cox said
about Britton starting the run. “It’s been different guys every night.”
Cox wasn’t totally pleased.
“I thought for the first quarter and a half we played really tentative. We
were horrible on our block outs but once we got through that stage we came
back strong.”
