Top-Ranked Grizzlies Pull Away from Lyncs, 59-47

By ROGER UNDERWOOD

It's one thing to have won all your games.

It's another to have won them by an average of 33.7 points, with the narrowest margin of victory being 11.

So some obviously wondered how Hoquiam might react if challenged with a truly close encounter, as Lynden Christian provided in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament Wednesday night in the SunDome.

"We're not used to coming from behind," said Grizzlies coach Brian Grun after his team trailed during the third quarter before winning 59-47. "But everybody's here to compete. Every team that's here is here for a reason. Every team here is a good team."

Especially Hoquiam, which at 25-0 remained the tournament's lone unbeaten team and a heavy favorite going into Thursday's 9 o'clock quarterfinal against Chelan.

The Grizzlies got 24 points from guard Justin Reed and 14 from 6-foot-6 center David Brittinen while 6-1 senior Jeff Niemi grabbed 13 rebounds.

They also snapped a 38-38 tie with six unanswered points to start the fourth quarter, after which Lynden Christian got no closer than four.

Sky Cearns, a 6-5 senior forward, hit a 15-foot baseliner to spark the decisive run. Guard Jeff Wayman followed with a driving bank shot and Reed added another runner for a 44-38 Hoquiam lead with 5:58 left.

After the Lyncs' Kyle Coston made one of two free throws at 5:04, Brittinen dunked off a feed from Cearns for a 46-39 cushion with 4:51 to play.

Lynden Christian, which shot only 24 percent during the second half and 31 percent for the game, had used an 11-0 second-quarter run for a 29-29 halftime tie. The Lyncs had led for much of the third quarter, although never by more than two points.

Greg Burgers, a 6-3 sophomore, led LC with 20 points and the 6-7 Coston, another soph, added 13 points and 11 boards.

Lynden Christian (15-9) meets Ridgefield at 2 p.m. Thursday in a loser-out game.
