Chelan Finishes Perfect Run

On a very imperfect night, Chelan completed a season of what was as close to perfection as one team can accomplish: a season of 27 games, 27 victories and the Class 2A state championship.

Chelan’s all-state center, Sarah Schramm, had missed nine of her 11 shots when, with 1:17 remaining, she sank the only one that really mattered — a go-ahead 16-footer from the top of the key for what turned out to be the winning points in the Goats’ 30-29 victory over Pullman.

“My shooting was really off,” Schramm said after finishing with six points and seven rebounds in the final game of her celebrated high school career before she heads off to play at Gonzaga University. “But that’s the thing about this team — we always have someone who steps up.”

That turned out to be Schramm’s younger sister, freshman Kristin, who shot 5-for-11 from the field and scored 11 points — a huge night in a game in which the two teams combined to shoot less than 25 percent. That offset an 11-point, nine-rebound performance by Pullman center Sade Smith, but was still a far cry from the Goats’ usual offensive output. Their 30 points was by far the Goats’ lowest of the season.

“We played a great defensive game,” Pullman coach Mike Davis said. “We held a real good offensive team to 30 points, and that’s not easy to do. We felt like if we held them in the 20s, we would win.”

What cost the Greyhounds (20-7), though, was a nine-minute scoreless stretch that finally ended in the final 19 seconds of the third quarter, by which time Pullman’s 16-14 lead had turned into a 22-16 Goats advantage.

A 10-4 Pullman run tied the game at 26-26, and a Smith putback knotted it again at 28-28. With Chelan looking out of sorts, Sarah Schramm stepped up and sank the big one.

“That’s one of my favorite shots,” she said. “I’m real comfortable from there. When I got that one, I knew it was good from the moment it left my hand.”

Schramm couldn’t say enough about her teammates, especially younger sister.

“She (Kristin) played awesome,” the older Schramm said. “I’m going to miss playing with her. I couldn’t ask for better teammates. I’m really going to miss every one of them.

“It was the most perfect team.”
