Schramm
Paces Chelan, 55-37
"I finally realized this is it for me," said the Chelan senior. "These are my last high school games. It really started to sink in today." So she went out and performed in a way befitting her stellar career. Schramm, a 6-foot forward who will next play for Gonzaga University, piled up 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and broke two tournament records as the top-ranked and unbeaten Goats dispatched Woodland 55-37 on the first day of the Class 1A state girls tournament. Schramm set a single-game tournament record with seven blocked shots against Woodland, and her 11 rebounds gave her 141 for her career, also a record. "Sarah always steps up in big games," said Chelan coach Jeff Eller, whose team improved to 24-0. "She saw some opportunities offensively and defensively and that really helped us." The game was a rematch of the 1A state volleyball final last November in Yakima, which Woodland won, and for a while the underdogs looked liked they had an upset in mind. The eighth-ranked Beavers (17-7), who have five freshmen on the team, led much of the early going and, after falling behind, a 6-0 run brought them within 32-28 three minutes into the third quarter. But after a subpar defensive effort in the first half, Chelan turned the heat up significantly in the second half and held the Beavers without a basket for a stretch of over eight minutes. "We struggled to stop them in the first half and that was our emphasis in the second half," Schramm said. "The younger girls were a big help with that." Like sophomore Cassy Pilkington, who chipped in 12 points, and Schramm's freshman sister, Kristin, who collected 10 points and six rebounds. As the game wore on, Chelan's defensive pressure took a major toll on Woodland, which shot just 15.4 percent in the second half.
The upset loss of previously unbeaten Blaine in the
morning served as a warning for Chelan, Schramm said. Eller, however, was relatively unconcerned about his players being ready. "From day one the target's been on our backs," he said. "If I were 15 or 16 I don't know if I could stay as focused as these kids have. They were ready for today. It was like, 'We're tired of the coach talking, let's get on with it.'" Senior Breanne Cochran, the star in Woodland's title run in volleyball, had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Chelan and Woodland will both have familiar opponents
Thursday. The Goats advance to a 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal against CWAC North
rival Cascade, which they have beaten twice. In the consolation bracket,
Woodland will face Ridgefield, also for the third time, at 12:30 p.m.
