Kevin Broadnax poured in a game-high 22 points as
10th-ranked Medical Lake defeated seventh-ranked Connell 60-44 on
Wednesday in the Class 2A boys state tournament.
Broadnax scored 16 of his points in the second half
as the Cardinals (19-4) used a 14-7 third-quarter run to take command
after leading 22-16 at the half. Teammate Steven Wesley, who finished
with 14 points, had eight in the second half.
“Yeah, he was going in among the trees,” Medical
Lake coach Arnold Brown said of Broadnax, who shot 7-for-7 in the second
half. “He has the ability to do that. It helped him last year just being
in practice with our guys, because we were big, guys 6-6, 6-8.”
Kris Knight and John Conrad paced Connell (16-9)
with 16 ande 15 points, respectively. Conrad pulled down 11 rebounds and
Knight 10.
But the Eagles were sluggish in the first half,
scoring just five points in the second quarter and shooting just 24
percent (6 of 24) in the first half.
Welsey complemented his 14 points with 10 rebounds,
four assists, a block, a steal and just one turnover.
