Steven Gray dropped in a game-high 31 points as Chimacum upended seventh-ranked Nooksack Valley 53-46 Thursday in a Class 2A boys state tournament quarterfinal.

Gray converted 12 of 24 shots, including 3 of 6 3-pointers, and had 20 in the second half. His free throws with 1:46 to play in the third put Chimacum (18-7) ahead to stay, and the Cowboys slowly built a comfortable lead from there.

It was the second straight 30-plus-points game for the sophomore, who scored 36 on Wednesday. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Kyle Mitchell had 13 points and eight rebounds, and J.E.B. Hobbs added 10 points and nine rebounds for Nooksack Valley (18-7).

Chimacum will face Medical Lake at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the tournament’s first semifinal.
