YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

Joe Boyle scored 14 of his game-high 17 points during a key second-half charge as top-ranked Cashmere battled back for a 51-43 victory over Nooksack Valley on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Class 2A boys state tournament.

The win sends the Bulldogs (22-4) into Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. game for fourth and seventh places.

Cashmere trailed 35-28 late in the third quarter before Boyle scored the final eight points of the quarter to cut NV’s lead to 37-36.

Boyle opened the fourth with another basket, and after the teams traded leads again, Boyle hit two more baskets to push Cashmere ahead by five, 44-39, with 3:13 to play. Nooksack Valley never got closer again.

Matt Caples added 16 points for the Bulldogs.
Bret Handy paced Nooksack Valley with 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Pioneers, playing in their 100th state-tournament game, finished the year at 18-8.
