Sarah Scates poured in 17 points as ninth-ranked Chewelah cruised past Ridgefield 65-42 in a Class 2A girls state tournament quarterfinal game Thursday.

Scates made 6 of 7 field-goal tries and 5 of 5 free throws as the Cougars improved to 20-4. Nikki Nelson added 16 points as Chewelah built up a 33-18 halftime lead.

The Cougars’ defense mustered 12 steals, including four from Jochelle Schatz, as Ridgefield committed 26 turnovers.

Lauren Hefflin led the Spudders (17-8) with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Tiffany Dawkins added 10 points.
