After fighting through a tough first-round game against upstart Toledo,
Bellevue Christian coach Michael Downs was a little worried that his
team was losing the intensity they’ve had in past seasons.
Although the Vikings had beaten Friday Harbor by 10 in the Tri-District
tournament, Downs noted that their defense wasn’t aggressive and didn’t
fight through screens well.
For Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup with the Wolverines, Downs brought
in Seattle Christian coach Roger DeBoer, who is a close friend of the
team, to talk to the Vikings before the game.
“He knows our team inside and out, and he didn’t see the fire and
intensity like in the past,” Downs added. “He challenged the kids to
come out with intensity, and they took it to heart.”
The second-ranked Vikings used a strong defensive effort and a stellar
shooting night to torch fourth-ranked Friday Harbor 57-33 in the
quarterfinals at the Yakima SunDome.
After struggling defensively against Toledo, they pressured Friday
Harbor into taking bad shots, which resulted in a 25.5 percent shooting
night for the Wolverines, while the Vikings shot 47.9 percent.
Nate Hendricks led all scorers with 19 points and Jeffrey Downs added 17
points as Bellevue Christian (22-2) advances to the semifinals against
River View (20-6), which defeated fifth-ranked Granger 67-54 in
Thursday’s other
quarterfinal.
“We played with a lot of heart tonight,” Downs said. “They know they can
do it, and they have tremendous confidence.”
