When Bellevue Christian's girls won their lone trophy at the 1A state tournament in 1988, the Vikings opened with two straight wins, but dropped the last two to settle for sixth place.

On Thursday, they made sure the school would be taking home its second trophy.

Led by a 16-4 third-quarter run, the Vikings dispatched defending state runner-up Freeman with a shocking 47-45 victory at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

“It’s amazing,” noted Melissa Reich, whose 16 points led all scorers while also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds led. “We’ve never played this well as a team.”

Freeman, which was looking to return to the state championship after winning its first-ever state games last year, led at the half 23-22.

But Bellevue Christian made a few halftime adjustments, including putting the 6-foot-2 Reich on Jessie DePell, who had scored eight points in the first half.

“We switched Melissa over to #30 (DePell) because she’s hard to shoot over,” Bellevue Christian coach Beth Campbell said. “We also said to be more patient on offense and reverse the ball to the weak side."

The adjustments helped, as the Vikings made the huge run to take a 38-27 lead after the third quarter, while also holding DePell to 1 for 6 shooting in the quarter for two points.

But the Scotties went on a run themselves in the fourth, including turning two steals into layups to pull within 43-41 with 3:46 remaining.

After a Reich layup made it 45-41, Claire Moberg added a layup of her own to get the Scotties back within two points.

DePell missed four 3-pointers in the final 1:45 to finish 5 of 24 from the field, and 1 of 7 from behind the arc, and Terra Oldham and Rebecca King each added a free throw in the final minute for the final margin.

Freeman’s Ashley Carrell missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to seal the Vikings' spot in the semifinals Friday against Zillah.

Even though Bellevue Christian already knows it's taking home a trophy, the Vikings would like to improve on the sixth-place finish from 1988.

“It was the kids’ goal at the beginning of the season to get to Saturday, and we’re there,” Campbell added. “Let’s hope we can improve from last time.”
