Normally active and animated as coach of Colfax's girls, Corey
Baerlocher was a study in composure Saturday night in the SunDome.
Colfax players celebrate their
third straight
Class 1A state championship after the
Bulldogs beat Bellevue Christian, 49-30.

Which seemed odd since his Bulldogs were playing for their third
straight Class 1A state championship.
Afterward, when Colfax had joined Cle Elum and Lynden Christian as the
only programs to win three successive 1A girls titles with a 49-30
conquest of Bellevue Christian, Baerlocher explained.
"I didn't want the girls to know how nervous I was," he said, smiling
and shaking his head in amazement as his players cut down the nets. "All
week I've been nervous. Before the White Swan game I was a wreck.
Earlier tonight I had to slow down my breathing."
But nothing slowed down his players.
Colfax, which entered the tournament ranked No. 3 and finished 24-4,
held the Vikings (No. 5 and 23-2) scoreless during the first quarter and
was never seriously threatened.
Nor did it matter that none of the Bulldogs scored in double figures
because their combination of man-to-man and zone defenses limited
Bellevue Christian to 26 percent shooting and held 6-foot-2 first-team
all-tournament star Melissa Reich scoreless until the 3:56 mark of the
third quarter.
Reich finished with seven points on 3-for-13 shooting.
Junior Kylie Shaw and sophomore Sadie Lazzarini led Colfax with nine
points each and sophomore point guard Jordan Harazin and junior center
Lauren Mellor had six each.
Katie Burns, one of only two seniors on the Bulldogs' roster, led a
39-27 rebounding advantage with six while four of her teammates added
four each. Colfax's other senior, reserve Patti Arthur, drew perhaps
Baerlocher's most emotional response when she scored with less than a
minute to play.
"These girls are nothing short of remarkable," Baerlocher said. "They
came here and battled all week.
"Last year people said, 'You're the defending champions,' and we said we
weren't defending anything because we didn't have any starters back.
This year they said, 'You're the defending champions,' but we didn't
really talk about it."
Michelle Teng and Terra Oldham, both freshmen, led Bellevue Christian
with eight points each. Since B.C.'s boys had beaten Brewster for the
title earlier Saturday night, the Vikings were seeking to become the
first 1A school since Brewster in 2003 to win both championships.
Colfax's title was not only its third in a row, equaling the
championship strings of Cle Elum (1981-83) and Lynden Christian
(1990-92), it was the Bulldogs' fourth in five years.
Plus, Colfax has won the last two Class 1A state volleyball
championships, also in the SunDome, with many of the same athletes.
"I can't really explain it," Baerlocher said, "except that these girls
came to play.
"Again."
Harazin was named to the all-tournament first team along with Reich,
Dana Bates of Warden and Lauren Rada of Burbank. Freeman's Jessie DePell
was voted MVP.
The second team consisted of White Swan's Alexandria Allen, White Pass's
Breanna Moody, Colfax's Mellor and Megan Teade and Zillah's Rosebud
Guthrie.
