Reich lifts Vikings past Napavine, 44-31

Senior center scores 20 points in victory

At last year’s 1A state tournament, the Bellevue Christian girls were dispatched in the quarterfinals by Napavine by 22 points.

It was an embarrassing showing for the Vikings, but a lot has changed over the past year.

Led by 6-foot-2 Seattle Pacific signee Melissa Reich, Bellevue Christian exacted revenge on the Tigers with a 44-31 victory in the first round of the 2006 tournament.

Reich’s height seems to always bring about double and triple-teams from the opposition, but she still find a way to get points whenever she feels like it.

“She’s been double and triple-teamed all year long, but she always stays calm,” Vikings coach Beth Campbell said. “She has real good composure, and she works hard to make others better.”

Reich finished 7 of 14 from the field, and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line for a game-high 20 points and she also grabbed 17 rebounds.

“She’s huge,” noted Campbell, “but that hasn’t always been to our advantage this year. There have been games where the officials have told me that they wouldn’t give her calls because she had such a height advantage.”

But somehow, even without the advantage, Reich still managed to capture league MVP honors for the third straight season.

Rebecca King added six points for Bellevue Christian, and Michelle Teng had five points and four assists.

Next up for the Vikings, which improve to 21-1 on the season, is Freeman (20-3). The Scotties, who fell in the championship last year to Colfax,
stopped Bush 47-19. The quarterfinal matchup will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Raychel Wilson led Napavine with 10 points and Courtney May, who averaged 14 points per game in the regular season, was held to eight. The Tigers face Bush on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
