Anthony Andrews told himself that after missing all seven of his 3-point
attempts on Wednesday, he would change his game. He needed it and, most
importantly, his team needed it.
But when Grandview took the floor Thursday against Cashmere in the Class
2A state quarterfinals, he couldn’t help himself. On his first shot,
Andrews launched a trey 31 seconds into the game.

And missed.
“These rims aren’t as friendly as a high school rim,” said the senior
guard, “so after that first miss I decided to get to the basket more,
take the ball inside. That was the plan before the game, but that first
shot was open.”
Once Andrews switched gears, he was nearly unstoppable and the
late-charging Greyhounds rode his game-high 22-point outburst to a 61-48
victory over Cashmere in the SunDome.
If you scouted Grandview’s opening-round win over Lakeside, Andrews
would have slipped off the chart with his 1-for-11 effort for two
points. But with a new plan and a fresh aggression, he was nothing but
trouble for Cashmere, which lost for the third straight year in the
quarterfinals.
“I’m so proud of him,” said Grandview coach Scott Parrish. “He struggled
a lot yesterday and I told him today to just play good defense and not
worry about the offense.”
Not worry about the offense?
“I didn’t hear that,” Andrews smiled. “I just knew I had to get to the
basket to help my team.”
While Andrews was 6-for-12 from the field he keyed Grandview’s
fourth-quarter breakaway at the foul line, hitting five straight free
throws in a 17-second span in the final two minutes.
The Greyhounds chased Cashmere for three quarters and finally passed the
Bulldogs when Andrews drained a 16-footer at the buzzer for a 42-41 lead
heading into the final frame.
Even though there were still six minutes to play, that’s when the
crucial series came. Wednesday’s hero, sophomore C.J. Lopez, swished a
3-pointer from the deep right corner for a 47-43 lead and eight seconds
later Cashmere’s Patrick Cloakey was called for an offensive foul.
Lopez’s trey started a 13-1 run as Parrish employed a patient, spread
offense that looked for slashing lanes to the basket. And as the
Greyhounds slashed, they got hacked.
In the final two minutes, Grandview scored 11 points — all from the foul
line.
“In the first half we were so close to getting over the hump but just
couldn’t do it,” said Parrish, whose team trailed 29-23 at the break and
had forced only four turnovers. “In the second half we got after them,
that’s our game. We need that pressure to get us going.”
Once in command, Grandview’s defense tightened even more. Cashmere
scored only one field goal in the final period and that came with 57
seconds left in the game.
Junior A.J. Valencia tallied 11 points, going 5-for-5 at the foul line,
and the unflappable Lopez, whose 3-pointer at the end of regulation
helped Grandview beat Lakeside in overtime, made both of the Greyhounds’
treys on Thursday.
“That’s the kind of team we have. Anybody can have a big night and lead
us,” said senior James Vela, who collected eight rebounds and three
assists.
After grumbling a bit when Grandview missed 10 free throws (13-23)
against Lakeside, Parrish watched his team connect crisply on 27 of 36
on Thursday.
“That’s more like us,” he said. “We’re normally a 70-percent team from
the line. I was hoping that was just a first-day (at state) thing.”
Cashmere’s Michael Miller canned three 3-pointers in the first half but
managed only five of his 18 points in the second half.
Advancing to the semifinals for the second year in a row, the Greyhounds
(22-4) will face King’s (22-3) at 4 p.m. The Knights, who feature
6-foot-9 Charlie Enquist, held off Nooksack Valley 37-34 in Thursday’s
second quarterfinal.
