Vashon downs EV
in overtime, 51-44

Red Devils force extra session on last-second
trey, but Pirates pull away for semifinal berth

For a couple of electric minutes Thursday night, it looked like déja vu all over again for East Valley.

After Kevin Komstadius’ heavily pressured, buzzer-beating 3-pointer boosted the Red Devils into overtime against Vashon Island, it seemed as if it might be a replay of 2004, when an upstart EV team made it all the way to the Class 2A state championship game.

But just as that team fell short against Hoquiam, this one was unable to close the deal, going scoreless during the four-minute extra session and falling 51-44 in the SunDome.

The defeat will send East Valley (15-10) into a 2 p.m. loser-out game Friday against Hockinson (20-5). Vashon Island (24-2), which shared a No. 3 ranking with Grandview coming into the tournament, will meet Lynden Christian (23-2) in a 7:30 semifinal.

Komstadius’ 3-ball produced the last of three second-half ties in a game the Pirates had led most of the way.

It came from the left side, over two defenders, a split-second after a teammate had screamed, “Shoot it!”.

In overtime, however, EV came up empty on all eight of its field goal attempts while Vashon Island added to its sizable advantage from the foul line.

After missing 3 of 4 free throws in the final 23.9 seconds of regulation, including the front of two one-and-one opportunities, the Pirates made 7 of 10 in OT.

Zac Andrus, whose 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter had given VI a 43-40 lead, made the first two points of OT, from the line, with 2:25 to play. Shane Davis, the game’s top scorer with 18 points, made one of two at 1:52 and again at 43.5, for a 48-43 Pirates lead.

Bryan Amstrup, Vashon’s 6-foot-7 senior center who had 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots, closed it out with three more foul shots in the final 19.2 seconds.

The Pirates, whistled for 11 fouls to East Valley’s 24, were 15 of 28 from the line to the Red Devils’ 2 for 4.

“They’re a good team,” EV coach Steve Elder said quietly after consoling his players. “They have good athletes, they get in the passing lanes and it’s not easy to run your stuff.”

Which was similar to Vashon Island coach Andy Sears’ appraisal of East Valley.

“That’s a tough team that really defends,” Sears said. “They’re the best defensive team we’ve played all year, in fact.”

Statistics bore the coaches out, with the Pirates shooting only 32 percent from the field and East Valley a shade warmer at 37 percent.

In addition to its free-throw advantage, Vashon helped its cause by committing only eight turnovers — one during a first half that saw it lead 24-21 — and compiling a 40-34 rebounding edge.

Drew Edgerly, hitting 4 of 10 3-point attempts, and Craig Harris shared Red Devil scoring honors with 12 points each while Komstadius, limited to nine first-half minutes due to foul trouble, had 11.

A 3-pointer by EV’s Chase Livingston had tied it 40-40 with 4:10 to go in regulation, but the Devils were able to add only one Harris free throw until Komstadius’ buzzer-beater.

“Talk about having your heart ripped out of your chest,” Sears said. “But then it got put back, and thankfully we sewed it back up.”

Elder’s squad can assure itself a trophy with a win Friday. Two wins will earn East Valley a fourth-place trophy while a win Friday and a loss Saturday will net seventh-place hardware.

“As a friend of mine just told me,” Elder said, “I’m just going to get in that East Valley boat, grab an oar and start rowing.”
