Rich Skillman scored a game-high 14 points to lead ninth-ranked Nooksack
Valley past Hockinson 57-35 on Saturday for fourth place in the Class 2A
boys state tournament.
The Pioneers, who finished 21-8, led wire to wire and put the game out
of reach with a 16-4 run in the third quarter. Skillman had five of his
nine second-half points in the third.
Skillman made 5 of 9 shots, including a 3-pointer. He also had four of
the Pioneers' 13 steals.
Teammate Bret Handy added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Chris
Mitchell hauled in a game-high nine rebounds for the Pioneers, who won
the title in 2003 and placed eighth in 2004.
Nooksack Valley outrebounded Hockinson 40-25.
Keith Moilanen scored 13 points to lead the Hawks, whose seventh-place
finish earned the 4-year-old school its first state trophy in any sport. Hockinson,
which is fielding its first senior class this year, ended its season at 21-6.
