Mosiman leads King's to repeat

Two-time MVP leads Knights with 17 points

OK, so maybe Eric Rasmussen is right. Maybe the 2006 King’s girls aren’t quite as powerful, don’t have quite as many weapons, as the 2005 version. Rasmussen coached both. He should know.

But this bunch made it look so easy.

With Sara Mosiman playing every bit like the two-time tournament MVP she is now, the Knights completed their four-game romp through the Class 2A state tournament with a 49-27 rout of a very solid Lynden Christian team.

Mosiman scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first half, nearly matching the Lyncs’ team total, as King’s raced out to a 29-15 lead that simply grew from there.

“(Rasmussen) was on me because last game I only shot six or eight shots,” Mosiman said, referring to the Knights’ semifinal trouncing of Pullman. “He’s been wanting me to take 20 or 25 shots a game, so he was getting on me a little bit.

“Tonight I felt confident, I felt good, so I came out firing.”

So did teammate Sarah Strand, who added 13 points. The Lyncs (24-3), perhaps in large part due to the Knights’ ballhawking defense, came out misfiring.

“I think we shot 14 percent in the first half tonight,” said Lynden Christian coach Curt DeHaan. “It’s pretty hard staying with anybody, shooting that percentage.” The Lyncs, who finished a frigid 9-for-42 (21 percent, were led by Jenna Reed’s 13 points and seven rebounds and Kristin Berendsen’s six and five.

The Knights (26-2) were blessed with four of the best players in the tournament — Mosiman, Danielle Clauson, Strand and Caitlyn Faidley, the first two of whom were voted all-tourney and the latter two of whom might well have been had they been different teams that weren’t quite so loaded.

“I think the expectations coming in makes it harder,” said Rasmussen, whose team obliterated its four opponents this week by an average of 19 points a game. “I think this (championship) was sweeter because of the expectations and the pressure.”

It was also sweeter for Strand and Clauson, both of whom had larger roles on this team and will be the mainstays of next year’s Knights, who will be back down in 1A and could very well be returning to Yakima for another state trip.

“This one was so much more fun for me,” said Strand, who had the Knights’ sixth-man role last year. “We could go for three (in a row) next year. It wouldn’t be a record, because we won’t be in 2A.”

But it would be three straight titles in the SunDome.

And without Mosiman, the two-time MVP who’ll be playing next year for the University of Washington, the Knights wouldn’t be facing the same pressure.

“We knew we had all the tools this year, all the weapons,” Mosiman said.

Next year? We’ll see.
