Girls semifinals
have star power
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
The more things change, the more they stay the
same.
After a classification shakeup that blended many of
last year's Class 2A schools back into the 1A fold, the familiar
heavyweights are still standing.
The final four in today's 1A girls tournament will
feature King's, Chelan, Colfax and Lynden Christian — a foursome that
has amassed 16 state titles and has a collective record this season of
98-9.
In today's first semifinal at 4 p.m., King's (24-3)
will take on Chelan (24-3) in a rematch of last year's 2A quarterfinals.
King's won that game 51-40 en route to repeating its state crown.
Both teams had to battle Thursday as King's downed
Brewster 55-46 and Chelan pulled away from Connell, 51-45.
King's used an 8-0 blitz that spanned 1:33 in the
third quarter to open a gap on Brewster, and Chelan overcame Coriann
Wood's 30-point outburst by finishing the game on a 7-0 run.
In Thursday's evening quarterfinals, things got a bit
easier.
Colfax's bid to become the first girls 1A school to
win four straight titles continued with a 67-39 victory over Naches
Valley, and Lynden Christian turned back Toledo 57-40.
That sets up a 7:30 p.m. semifinal between two teams
with 25 wins and 14-game win streaks. Lynden Christian (25-1), however,
absorbed its only loss to a 2A opponent, Anacortes.
Obviously primed and ready, Colfax and Lynden
Christian outscored their quarterfinal opponents 28-12 in the first
quarter.
